pixels + progress: unity price change

Unity is doing what?

If you are like me, your feeds and timelines have been flooded with updates regarding the Unity price change.

In today’s pixels + progress emergency episode, I cover what the Unity price change means. I want to keep this series aimed toward the facts, therefore the flyer below is solely informative, however, in this portion, I want to share my thoughts on the situation:

I am a solo developer who uses Unity as their main game engine, and seeing “We want to acknowledge the confusion” as an update to the situation, is never comforting.

Do I understand that Unity as a company is trying to evolve and find ways to increase their own revenue from the developers that utilize their product, yes. For the bigger companies, I can understand why this is a solid business move and makes sense for the scalability and longevity of their company’s growth. However, my heart immediately sank, seeing examples of indie developers that have a successful game currently, calculating how much they would owe, often as a single person or small team— the amount outweighing what they even made on said game. They claim this won’t affect 90% of users, and for the sake of smaller studios and solo developers alike, I hope they are right.

In my opinion, there needs to be more clarification on exactly what this framework entails because there seems to be a lot of confusion about what qualifies. This also locks a lot of users into having to accept these changes unilaterally, just for choosing Unity as their engine of choice for development.

I plan on following the new developments and what this may mean for Unity developers in the future.
